RIPTA Bus Accessibility

RIPTA is striving to become a model for accessible public transportation, offering service that is safe, dependable and inclusive to all our customers, including those with disabilities.

Every bus has a kneeler and a wheelchair lift or ramp, and drivers are trained to help customers secure their wheelchairs safely.  Customers with disabilities should board first and exit last.

Things To Know Before You Go

We make riding easy with these bus features:

All RIPTA buses are accessible.

All RIPTA buses and trolleys are equipped with:

  • The capability to kneel or lower to make boarding easier.
  • Lifts (on high-floor buses) or ramps (on low-floor buses).
  • Two securement areas for wheeled mobility devices.
  • Destination signs that are bright and easy to read.
  • Priority seating areas near the front of the bus.

All customers have the right to use accessibility equipment (such as ramps and lifts).

Service animals are always welcome on RIPTA vehicles and property.

Additional Access Information Regarding RIPTA Buses

  • Bus operators will make every attempt to pull up to the curb at a bus stop.  If they are unable to pull up to the curb, the operator will board you or let you off at a safer location nearby.
  • Bus operators will most likely board customers who use wheeled mobility devices before all other customers.
  • It is RIPTA policy to secure all wheeled mobility devices while on board a bus.
  • The bus operator will announce route number and destination of the bus, as well as major transfer points and stops.

Boarding the Bus Using the Lift or Ramp

To use the lift, wait seven to ten feet from the curb.  This allows enough room for the lift or ramp to be lowered properly.  Let the driver know you need to use the lift or ramp, and be prepared to board first.  RIPTA drivers are thoroughly trained in operating the lift or ramp and will help you get on and off the lift if necessary.

The lift will beep when in motion.  When it’s lowered, the driver will indicate when it’s safe to get on the platform.  If you use a wheelchair, we recommend that you back the chair onto the lift.  Make sure your brakes are locked.  Handrails are provided for extra safety. An assistant may ride on the lift with you and help you secure the safety belt.

Each bus has two spaces at the front for passengers in wheelchairs. These spaces include safety belts for extra protection. The driver is required to make sure your chair is secured.  We recommend that you use the lap belt.

If more than two customers in wheelchairs want to ride, the driver will tell them when the next bus is scheduled to arrive.  If the waiting time is longer than 30 minutes, the driver will arrange for an alternate vehicle to pick up passengers.

Exiting the Bus Using the Lift

When the bus approaches your stop, signal to the driver by pulling the cord near the window, pushing the vertical bar, or verbally notifying the driver.

Allow customers not using the lift or ramp to exit first. The driver will then activate the lift or ramp.  The driver will unbuckle the wheelchair securement belts and position your chair to face outward on the lift. When you are in position, lock your brakes and shut off the power on motorized wheelchairs.  If possible, hold the handrails.  Customers who stand on the lift should face outward and hold the handrails.

When you reach ground level, unlock your brakes or turn on your power switch and move away from the lift.
